A whole-farm investment analysis of some precision agriculture technologies AgEcon
Knight, Brad; Malcolm, Bill.
This study used information about a farm in the Victorian Mallee during the period 1998 – 2005 to analyse the profitability of investing in Precision Agriculture and Site-Specific Crop Management technology and farming systems. Two equipment guidance systems were evaluated. Both guidance systems earned more than 8 percent real return p.a. on the extra capital invested. A Real-Time Kinetic (RTK) guidance system with a precision of 2 cm and a capital cost of $50,000 was less profitable than a Sub-Metre guidance system with 20 cm accuracy and costing $20,000. Producers investing in RTK guidance technology would be well-paid to also adopt supporting management practices that enhance crop gross margins or provide other benefits. The capital cost of GPS...

Adoption of Variability Detection and Variable Rate Application Technologies by Cotton Farmers in Southern United States AgEcon
Nair, Shyam; Wang, Chenggang; Segarra, Eduardo; Belasco, Eric J.; Velandia, Margarita M.; Reeves, Jeanne M..
A nested logit model was used to analyze the 2009 Southern Cotton Precision Farming Survey to study the impact of farmer and farm characteristics on the adoption of Variability Detection Technologies (VDT) and the adoption of Variability Rate application Technology (VRT) conditioned on the type of the VDT chosen. The results showed that the farm size and exposure to extension activities are important factors affecting the choice of VDTs. The farmers adopting both soil and plant based VDTs are more likely to adopt VRT. The probability of adoption of VRTs was lower for Texas cotton farmers irrespective of the type of VDT adopted. In general, younger, more educated farmers who use computers for farming operations are more likely to adopt VRT when they...

ANÁLISE DA ADOÇÃO DA TECNOLOGIA DA INFORMAÇÃO NA HORTICULTURA BRASILEIRA AgEcon
Boteon, Margarete; Silva, Rafaela Cristina Da; Deleo, Joao Paulo Bernardes.
A conclusão...

GoogleEarth for Precision Agriculture (Aswan, Egypt) CIGR Journal
Farah, Ashraf.
Google Earth is a virtual globe, map and geographical information software. It maps the Earth by the superimposition of images obtained from satellite imagery, aerial photography and GIS 3D globe. GoogleEarth® has become recently the ultimate source of spatial data and information for private and public decision-support systems. GoogleEarth is a strong tool for precision agriculture. It could be used for farm planning, field mapping, soil sampling, crop scouting, crop health monitoring, variable rate applications, and yield mapping. Also, Google Earth presents a base layer of an aerial photographic image that is geo-located. Different layers of information could be used with this base layer such as soil maps, mineral deposits and crop productivity. This...

Sampling grids used to characterise the spatial variability of pH, Ca, Mg and V% in Oxisols Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Cherubin,Maurício Roberto; Santi,Antônio Luis; Eitelwein,Mateus Tonini; Da Ros,Clovis Orlando; Bisognin,Mateus Bortoluzi.
Knowledge of spatial variability is an important factor to be considered in planning a program of soil sampling and crop management under precision agriculture (PA). In this context, the aim of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of the dimensions of sampling grids used in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil to characterise the spatial variability of the attributes pHwater, base saturation (V%), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) levels. The study was carried out on 30 agricultural sites located in the northern region of RS, having soils classified as Oxisols and managed using the tools of PA. The dimensions of the grids under study were: 100 x 100 m (10 areas), 142 x 142 m (10 areas) and 173 x 173 m (10 areas). Soil was collected at a depth of...

The Impact of Precision Agriculture Techniques on Kentucky Grain Farmers' Carbon Footprint AgEcon
Brown, Rachael M.; Dillon, Carl R.; Schieffer, Jack; Shockley, Jordan M..
This study estimates the carbon footprint of a Henderson County, Kentucky grain farmer under different production strategies; traditional farming and precision agriculture technologies. Four constrained optimization, whole farm analysis models were formulated under no-till conditions. One of the models was optimized without utilizing any precision agriculture techniques and was used as a base model to compare the other three models which incorporated precision agriculture technologies (PAT). The three technologies investigated include sub-meter auto-steer, RTK auto-steer and automatic section control (ASC). These models are used to analyze the different production systems to determine if said technologies increase expected net returns and enhance the...

VLIT NODE Sensor Technology and Prefarm AgEcon
Charvat, Karel; Musil, Marek; Krivanek, Zbynek.
Precision farming systems are based on a detailed monitoring of information and data that are necessary for successful decision-making in crop production. The system is designed for data collection from several resources. In past years an extensive research and development work has been done in the field of wireless sensor networks (WSN) in the world. When a wireless sensor network (WSN) is used for agricultural purposes, it has to provide first of all a long-reach signal. The present paper describes new long distance RFID based technology implementation - VLIT NODE.
